A Look at Recent Results for the CSU Fullerton Golf Program
California State University (CSU), Fullerton, is a Division-I NCAA school with 20 men’s and women’s athletics programs, including basketball, baseball, cross country, tennis, and golf. Known as the Titans, the majority of its teams, including men’s and women’s golf, compete in the Big West Conference (BWC).
The men’s and women’s golf seasons, which began in September, featured tournaments in Colorado, California, and Arizona. Both teams wrapped up their seasons at the Big West Championship, held in La Quinta, California (men’s) and Las Vegas, Nevada (women’s), in April. Here’s a look back at some of the final results for CSU Fullerton golf program.
Men Finish Second at Big West Championship
The CSU-Fullerton Titans men’s golf team finished second at the 2024 Big West Championship with a three-round score of 10-under par, four strokes behind first-place Long Beach State (LBS). Seven other teams — Cal Poly, UC Irvine, UC Davis, CSU-Northridge, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Riverside — competed in the year-end conference tournament. CSU-Fullerton was in first place after the first round, five strokes ahead of LBS, but had a rough second round with a combined score of 289, eight strokes more than LBS. The Titans tied for the second-lowest combined score in round three (284).
Tegan Andrews, Garrett Boe, Travor McNary, Russell Howlett, and Howard Yoon were the five golfers that represented the Titans in the tournament. Andrews led all CSU-Fullerton golfers with a three-round score of 202, one off his best-ever result of 201 at the Nick Watney Invitational in September 2023. Boe shot an opening round 75, but improved each round with subsequent scores of 72 and 69 for a three-round total of even-par 216. McNary also improved his score each round and finished with a 3-over 219. Howlett and Yoon shot 221 and 224, respectively.
While the Titans came up short in their pursuit of winning the Big West Championship, they had a solid season, winning four events and recording eight top-three results.
Women Secure Third-Place Finish
The women’s team of Davina Xanh, Gabby Minier, Kajsa Landstrom, Katharina Zeilinger, Linley Ooi, and Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith finished third at the Big West Championship with a combined score of 37-over 901. The third-place finish equaled the best-ever result in the conference tournament for the CSU-Fullerton women’s golf team. The team also tied its previous best result for the 2023–24 season, third place at the Grand Canyon Invitational in February.
Xanh, who was named to the Big West All-Tournament team, led the Titans with a 4-over 220, including a three-round best score of 69 in the third round. The sophomore golfer recorded a top-10 result in all 10 events this season. Minier finished second on the team with a 7-over 223 and finished in eighth place overall.
The Titans were in fifth place after both the first and second rounds, but rallied with a strong third round. They had the second-lowest score collectively (289) in the final round.
Davina Xanh Wins Big West Women’s Golfer of the Year
Xanh, who previously earned Big West Golfer of the Month distinction in March, was named Big West Women’s Golfer of the Year in April. In addition to registering top-10 finishes at each of the events in which she participated, Xanh tied for first at the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Kapolei, Hawaii in October and finished the year with a program-best 71.43 average round score. She also earned First Team All-Big West distinction.
Born and raised in Weston Super Mare, England, Xanh was also named to the Big West First Team All-Conference in her first year with the program in 2022–23. She had three top-10 finishes, as well as a first-place tie at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, and led all Titans golfers with a 74.07 scoring average as a freshman.
Tegan Andrews Named Big West Individual Champion and Golfer of the Year
Xanh wasn’t the only CSU-Fullerton golfer to earn individual honors in 2024. Andrews, who recorded three first-place finishes and six top-10 results, was named the Big West Men’s Golfer of the Year. He was also the Big West Individual Champion, finishing the conference tournament with a score of 14-under 202. Andrews was also named to the All-Conference First Team, averaged a team-low 69.73 through 10 events, and was Big West Golfer of the Month in October and February. He is the second Titan to win Big West Men’s Golfer of the Year, joining Mark Anguiano (2014).
Because he had the lowest individual score in the Big West Championship, Andrews earned a spot in the NCAA Regionals at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California, from May 13–15. He was in 71st place with a 10-over 80 after the first round, but shot 75 and 74 in the next two rounds to climb to a 63rd-place finish.
Other Individual Honorable Mentions
Women’s team member Minier received a Big West Honorable Mention distinction as did men’s team members Boe and Howlett. A graduate transfer, Minier had a season-best T14th result at the Red Rocks Invitational and played a key role in the success of the women’s team at the Big West Championship.
Boe, a graduating senior, averaged 71.5 strokes in 30 rounds this past season and had a season-best 7-under 206 at the Nick Watney Invitational. Howlett averaged 71.86 strokes in 21 rounds in his junior season and shot a career-best single round score of 66. He also tied his career-best tournament total with a score of 204 at the Grand Canyon University Invitational.
